About Zonguldak

Zonguldak is a Black Sea port city in northwestern Turkey and the capital of Zonguldak Province. Known as the 'Black Diamond' of Anatolia, it grew around hard coal mining that began in the 1800s and still shapes the city's industrial identity, steep harbour setting and working-class character.

The city's mining heritage is visible in landmarks such as the Mining Museum, Üzülmez Culture Valley, the restored coke plant chimney and Uzun Mehmet Mosque, named after the miner credited with discovering coal in the region. Surrounding hills, forested slopes and the Black Sea coastline give the urban centre a rugged, layered look.

Beyond the centre, Karadeniz Ereğli (Kdz. Ereğli) is the province's largest and most historic district, home to the Cehennemağzı Caves, Byzantine-era ruins and the Erdemir steelworks. Çaycuma and Filyos add archaeological and beach attractions, including the ancient port site of Tios, while Gökgöl Cave near the city centre is one of Turkey's notable show caves.

The city remains an industrial and logistics hub, with coal, steel production, Filyos Port and the expanding Filyos Valley industrial zone driving business travel. Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University also brings a student population and a modest cultural calendar of festivals and events.

For travellers, Zonguldak offers a less-travelled look at Turkey's Black Sea region: mining heritage, caves, coastal roads, fish restaurants and nearby waterfalls. It suits visitors interested in industrial history and nature as much as business travellers visiting the region's industrial facilities.

Zonguldak Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Late spring to early autumn, roughly May to September, brings the mildest weather for exploring Zonguldak's caves, coast and outdoor sights. Winters are cool and rainy, while summer weekends attract locals to nearby Black Sea beaches.

How to Get Around

The city centre is steep and compact enough for walking, while municipal buses and shared minibuses (dolmuş) connect districts such as Kozlu, Kilimli and Karadeniz Ereğli. Taxis and rental cars are useful for reaching Gökgöl Cave, Filyos and the wider coastline.

Where to Stay

Hotels are concentrated in the city centre near the harbour and in Karadeniz Ereğli for coast and history trips. Çaycuma offers a quieter option closer to the airport and Filyos.

Food & Drink

Zonguldak's Black Sea table features hamsi (anchovies), corn bread, black cabbage dishes and regional pastries, with fish restaurants along the coast and lively teahouses in the centre. Local markets and bakeries are good places to sample provincial produce and traditional Black Sea specialities.
