About Yozgat

Yozgat is the compact capital of Yozgat Province in Turkey's Central Anatolia region, set on a high steppe plateau at roughly 1,300 metres. The city is known historically as Bozok and grew into an important regional administrative and market centre under the Çapanoğlu family, whose 18th-century influence shaped much of the old town.

Today central Yozgat combines Ottoman-era landmarks with a small but active provincial city. The 1908 Yozgat Clock Tower stands at the heart of the centre, while Çapanoğlu Mosque is among the best-known examples of late Ottoman mosque architecture in Anatolia. The Archaeology and Ethnography Museum and the nearby Çamlık National Park, one of Turkey's earliest national parks, preserve local history and a rare pine forest within the surrounding steppe.

Yozgat's centre is easy to explore on foot, with shops, cafés and restaurants clustered around the clock tower and main squares. Beyond the city, visitors travel to Sarıkaya Roman Bath, an impressive Roman thermal structure in the province, and to Bozok University, which gives the city a lively student presence.

Economically, Yozgat remains a centre for agriculture, livestock and public administration, while the Ankara–Sivas high-speed railway and improving road links make it a practical stopover in Central Anatolia. Leisure travellers come for the pine forest, historical sites and local food, while business visitors value the city's compact centre and role as a provincial administrative hub.

Yozgat Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for exploring Yozgat's compact centre and Çamlık National Park. Summers can be hot and dry, while cold, snowy winters suit indoor cultural stops and traditional winter dishes.

How to Get Around

Central Yozgat is walkable, and local minibuses plus municipal buses connect the main districts. Taxis and rental cars are practical for reaching Çamlık National Park, Sarıkaya Roman Bath and nearby areas, while the high-speed train station links Yozgat with Ankara and Sivas.

Where to Stay

The most convenient base is the compact city centre near the Clock Tower and Çapanoğlu Mosque, where hotels, guesthouses and restaurants are within walking distance. Accommodation is limited, so booking ahead is wise during university events, holidays and summer travel.

Food & Drink

Yozgat's signature dish is Arabaşı soup, a winter specialty traditionally served with goose-meat broth, alongside local pastries and Central Anatolian home cooking. Cafés and small restaurants around the centre offer tea, breakfast spreads and regional meals.
