About Ataq Airport
Ataq Airport is the main air gateway for Ataq, the capital of Shabwah Governorate in southeastern Yemen, serving domestic travel and supporting access to the region's oil fields and surrounding areas.
Established in 1987 with Soviet assistance as a military airfield, the airport received its first civil flight in 1988 from Aden. After Yemeni unification it was used mainly to transport foreign experts to Shabwah's oil fields, and direct flights from Aden and Sana'a began in early 2011.
Located about 2 km northwest of central Ataq, the airport sits at an elevation of 1,138 metres and has a single asphalt runway, 13/31, measuring 2,890 by 50 metres, together with one passenger terminal.
After a suspension lasting around a decade, civil operations resumed in September 2025 with Yemenia Airways domestic flights, and taxis connect the airport to Ataq and nearby areas.
