About Muğla

Muğla is the compact provincial capital of Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey, set among pine-covered hills about 20 km from the Aegean coast. Although the province is best known for the coastal resorts of Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye, the city of Muğla itself has a quieter character shaped by its old Ottoman-era centre and its role as a regional administrative and commercial hub.

The city's history reaches back to ancient Mobolla in Caria, and it later became the seat of the Menteşe principality and an Ottoman sanjak from 1420. Its historic Saburhane quarter preserves narrow lanes, traditional stone and timber houses, fountains and restored mansions, while landmarks such as the clock tower, Kurşunlu Mosque, the Arasta bazaar and the Muğla Museum reflect layers of local heritage.

Daily life centres on the compact old town and bazaar streets, where cafés, small shops and local eateries sit close to the university and government buildings. Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University gives the city a visible student population, and its inland location makes it a practical base for exploring the wider province.

As a gateway to the Turkish Riviera, Muğla combines an authentic working-city atmosphere with easy access to beaches, ancient sites and marinas along the coast. Leisure travellers use it as a stopover or alternative base, while business and administrative visitors come for government offices, regional trade and services.

Whether you are passing through toward Bodrum or Fethiye or spending a few days in the old town, Muğla offers a slower, more local view of a province famous worldwide for its coastline.

Muğla Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

April to June and September to October offer mild weather for exploring Muğla's old town and nearby countryside. Summers are hot and dry and are better suited to coastal trips toward Bodrum, Marmaris or Fethiye, while winters are cooler and quieter.

How to Get Around

Central Muğla is compact and easy to explore on foot, while dolmuş minibuses connect the centre with surrounding neighbourhoods. Intercity buses run to Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and other coastal towns, and a rental car is useful for reaching beaches and archaeological sites.

Where to Stay

Staying in central Muğla or the historic Saburhane area keeps you close to the bazaar, museums and restaurants. For a resort holiday, Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye offer coastal hotels, while quieter spots such as Akyaka provide a small-town seaside alternative.

Food & Drink

Muğla's food scene includes olive-oil vegetable dishes, local cheeses, honey, citrus, mezes and grilled meat served in family-run lokantas and cafés. The bazaar area is a good place to try local produce, pastries and Turkish tea or coffee.
