About Koshi
Biratnagar is the capital and largest city of Koshi Province in eastern Nepal, close to the Indian border. As Nepal's historic industrial centre and a busy trading hub, it serves as the main gateway to the eastern Terai plains.
The city grew from the old Gograha Bazaar and was formally named Biratnagar in 1919. Its best-known landmark is the Biratnagar Jute Mills, established in 1936 as Nepal's first large industry, and the city later became a centre of the 1947 anti-Rana movement.
Central Biratnagar is compact and walkable, with commercial life concentrated around Main Road, the bus park and busy market streets. Nearby natural and cultural sites include Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, the hill town of Dharan and the Baraha Kshetra temple area.
As a border city near Jogbani, Biratnagar handles extensive trade with India and is home to jute, steel and food-processing industries. Its domestic airport and road connections make it a practical base for business travellers and for journeys toward the eastern hills and the Everest region.
For leisure visitors, Biratnagar offers markets, temples, local food and easy access to the Terai's wetlands and wildlife, while its industrial and commercial role keeps the city relevant for business travel throughout the year.
