About Lumbini

Lumbini, in the Rupandehi District of Lumbini Province in southern Nepal, is one of the world's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is best known as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha, and draws visitors seeking history, spirituality and quiet reflection.

The Sacred Garden forms the heart of Lumbini. The Maya Devi Temple marks the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi is believed to have given birth beneath a sal tree, and the nearby Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka around 249 BC, is among the oldest known evidence of the site. Around it lie the Pushkarini sacred pond, the Bodhi tree and excavated monastic remains.

Beyond the core archaeological area, the Lumbini Development Zone was laid out by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange. Its eastern and western monastic zones contain monasteries, stupas and meditation centres built by Buddhist communities from countries including Thailand, Myanmar, China, Japan, South Korea and Sri Lanka, each reflecting a distinct architectural tradition.

The World Peace Pagoda, Lumbini Museum and the Lumbini Crane Sanctuary offer further reasons to linger, while nearby Tilaurakot, associated with ancient Kapilavastu, extends the Buddhist circuit. Lumbini Bazaar provides practical services, and the gateway city of Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa) offers more hotels, dining and transport links.

Lumbini's international religious significance also makes it a venue for retreats, conferences and cultural exchange. For leisure travellers, it offers a calm, contemplative stop on a wider Nepal journey, while business and event visitors benefit from its improving airport links and growing hospitality infrastructure.
