About Gautam Buddha International Airport
Gautam Buddha International Airport is Nepal's second international airport and the closest air gateway to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Located in Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa) in Lumbini Province, it serves domestic and international travelers visiting southern Nepal's major Buddhist and cultural sites.
The airport began operations as a domestic airfield in 1958 and was renamed in 1977 in honour of Gautam Buddha. After a major upgrade, it was inaugurated as an international airport in May 2022, with its first international flight taking off on 16 May 2022.
The airport has a single 3,000-metre runway and two passenger terminals: a newer international terminal and a domestic terminal, along with cargo facilities. It lies about 3 km from central Bhairahawa, while Lumbini is roughly 20 km to the west.
Travelers can continue by taxi, van, e-rickshaw, private transfer or rental car via road links including National Highway 05. With restaurants, Wi-Fi, ATMs and duty-free shopping, the airport serves as a convenient gateway for pilgrims and visitors to Lumbini Province.
