About Tenzing-Hillary Airport
Tenzing-Hillary Airport is a small domestic airport serving Lukla and the wider Solukhumbu district of Nepal. Opened in 1971, it was built with the support of Sir Edmund Hillary and later renamed in honour of Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first climbers to summit Mount Everest.
The airport is the principal gateway to the Everest region, connecting trekkers and climbers with Namche Bazaar, Sagarmatha National Park and the trail to Everest Base Camp. Because of its location at an elevation of about 2,846 metres and its short, steeply sloping 527-metre runway, it is served only by specialised short takeoff and landing aircraft and helicopters.
Located in Lukla village roughly 138 km east of Kathmandu, the airport is reached mainly by fixed-wing flights from Kathmandu or Ramechhap. Weather permitting, the flight from Kathmandu takes around 30 to 40 minutes, while flights from Ramechhap are shorter; there is no direct road access to Lukla.
The single terminal offers basic passenger facilities, with most services such as tea houses, lodges, shops and ATMs located in the nearby village. Despite its compact size, the airport plays an essential role in moving people, supplies and rescue services through the Khumbu region.
