About Sichuan
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province in southwestern China, best known for giant pandas, relaxed teahouse culture and bold Sichuan cuisine. It combines more than 2,300 years of continuous history with the energy of one of China's fastest-growing modern cities.
The city's long past remains visible at landmarks such as Wuhou Shrine, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Wenshu Monastery and the restored lanes of Kuanzhai Alley. Jinli Ancient Street showcases traditional architecture and local crafts, while the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the city's most famous attraction and a major reason visitors come to Sichuan.
Neighbourhoods range widely across Chengdu. Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li form the modern shopping and dining core, Jinjiang and Wuhou hold historic sites and lively nightlife around Jiuyanqiao, and the High-tech Zone and Tianfu New Area concentrate offices, finance and new development. People's Park teahouses offer a quieter glimpse of everyday local life.
Chengdu is also an important business and innovation centre, with strengths in electronics, aviation, automotive and software, and it serves as a key departure point for China-Europe freight rail routes. A busy calendar of trade fairs and events attracts business travellers, while hotpot, mapo tofu and street snacks anchor a food scene that draws leisure visitors year-round.
With easy access to the Leshan Giant Buddha, Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan irrigation system, Chengdu is both a destination in its own right and a gateway to the wider scenery of Sichuan.
