About Heilongjiang
Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China and one of the region's largest cities. It sits on the Songhua River and is widely known as the Ice City for its long, cold winters and internationally celebrated winter festival. Russian and European architectural influences give Harbin a distinctive character that sets it apart from most other Chinese cities.
Founded as a railway hub at the turn of the 20th century, Harbin grew into a cosmopolitan trading centre with Russian, Jewish and other foreign communities. The onion-domed Saint Sophia Cathedral, the historic facades of Central Street and old railway buildings remain visible reminders of that past, while Sun Island and the Siberian Tiger Park add outdoor and wildlife attractions.
Each winter the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival transforms the city into a showcase of illuminated ice architecture and giant snow sculptures, centred on Ice and Snow World. In summer Harbin becomes a cooler riverside retreat, with parks, promenades and a lively beer culture along the Songhua River.
Central Daoli offers the main heritage sights, shopping streets and restaurants; Nangang is a busy business and transport district; and Songbei is home to modern cultural venues and the main winter festival grounds. Harbin is also a regional centre for manufacturing, research and higher education, led by Harbin Institute of Technology, and an important gateway for China-Russia trade.
Leisure visitors come mainly for the ice festival, Russian heritage and hearty northeastern food, while business travellers are drawn by the city's industries, conference venues and expanding winter-economy sector.
