About Los Lagos

Puerto Montt is the capital of Chile's Los Lagos Region and the main gateway to northern Patagonia and the Chiloé Archipelago. Built around a working port on Reloncaví Sound, the city combines maritime industry, salmon-farming commerce and a steadily growing tourism sector with views of the Andes and nearby volcanoes.

Founded in 1853 during German settlement of the Lake District, Puerto Montt grew from a small port into the administrative and transport hub of the region. Its Plaza de Armas and wooden cathedral reflect that history, while the waterfront costanera and the Angelmó fishing cove keep everyday life close to the sea.

Angelmó is the city's best-known landmark: a lively market where stalls sell fresh seafood, smoked fish and local crafts alongside simple restaurants serving curanto and other regional dishes. Across the bay, Tenglo Island offers a viewpoint over the port, and the surrounding province opens onto Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas, the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, and Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.

As a transport and service centre, Puerto Montt handles flights, ferries, long-distance buses and cargo routes that connect central Chile with Chiloé and Patagonia. The salmon-processing, fishing and logistics industries make it important for business travel, while its hotels, restaurants and tour operators support leisure visitors year-round.

Visitors typically use Puerto Montt as a base for day trips to Puerto Varas, the lake district's national parks and the ferries to Chiloé, or as a starting point for longer journeys along the Carretera Austral.

Los Lagos Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The most reliable period is December through March, when southern Chile's summer brings milder, drier weather and the best conditions for lakes, national parks and ferry trips to Chiloé. Spring and autumn are quieter and greener, while winter is rainy but dramatic for waterfall and forest scenery.

How to Get Around

Puerto Montt is compact enough to explore the centre on foot, while local micros (buses) and colectivos (shared taxis) connect neighbourhoods such as Angelmó, Pelluco and the bus terminal. Taxis, rental cars and private transfers are useful for reaching the airport, Puerto Varas and lake district excursions.

Where to Stay

The centre near Plaza de Armas is convenient for restaurants, shopping and the waterfront, while Angelmó and Pelluco offer a more local seaside feel. Puerto Varas, about 20 km away, is a popular alternative for travellers wanting a quieter lake-town base with easy access to Puerto Montt.

Food & Drink

Puerto Montt is known for seafood, especially at Angelmó market, where curanto, salmon, hake, machas and other shellfish are served in casual cookhouses. German-influenced cakes and kuchen appear in nearby lake towns, and the city offers everything from market stalls to sit-down restaurants along the waterfront.
