About Ñuble

Chillán is the capital of Chile's Ñuble Region, a south-central city in the fertile Central Valley between the Andes and the coastal range. It is known as a gateway to the mountains, a long-standing agricultural centre and the birthplace of Bernardo O'Higgins, one of Chile's independence leaders.

The city has been shaped by earthquakes and rebuilding, most notably the 1939 Chillán earthquake that destroyed much of the centre and killed tens of thousands of people. Its modern centre, laid out around four tree-lined avenues, features the distinctive concrete Catedral de Chillán and a large collection of public murals, including works at the Escuela México painted by Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros.

Chillán's identity is tied to the surrounding countryside. The Mercado de Chillán showcases local produce and crafts, while the nearby Itata Valley is an emerging wine region known for old-vine país and cinsault. In the Andes, the Nevados de Chillán valley offers hot springs and a ski resort.

The city is a regional hub for services, education and agroindustry, with university campuses and transport links along Chile's central corridor. Neighbourhoods and nearby Chillán Viejo offer a mix of historic sites and everyday local life.

For travellers, Chillán works both as a destination and a base: visitors can explore wineries, markets, ski and thermal areas, while business travellers find a compact, functional regional capital with connections to Concepción and Santiago.
