About General Bernardo O'Higgins Airport
General Bernardo O'Higgins Airport is a public aerodrome serving Chillán and the Ñuble Region of central-southern Chile. It was established in 1930 on the former San Ramón property, where its first dirt runway measured 600 metres; it was later named after the Chilean independence leader Bernardo O'Higgins.
In 2015 the aerodrome was modernized with a new climate-controlled passenger terminal, a control tower, aircraft rescue and fire-fighting facilities, parking and taxiways. The asphalt runway is 1,750 metres long and can accommodate aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737 or Airbus A318.
Located about 7 km east of central Chillán on the road to Coihueco, the airport is quick to reach by taxi, private transfer or rental car. It mainly supports private aviation, flight instruction, military activity and smaller-scale passenger and charter operations rather than scheduled airline services.
Facilities are compact and functional, with a small terminal and basic services, making the aerodrome a convenient access point for travel to Chillán, Chillán Viejo and the Andes destinations of the Nevados de Chillán area.
