About Valparaíso
Valparaíso is one of Chile's most distinctive cities, a working seaport built across a steep arc of hills above the Pacific Ocean. Known as the 'Jewel of the Pacific,' it pairs a UNESCO World Heritage historic quarter with colourful hillside houses, winding stairways and one of South America's richest street-art scenes.
Founded as Santiago's port in the 16th century, the city boomed in the 19th century as a stopover for ships rounding Cape Horn and as a gateway for European immigration. That legacy survives in its eclectic architecture, historic funiculars and the ornate buildings around Plaza Sotomayor, as well as in the Chilean Navy's continuing presence.
The most visited neighbourhoods are the cerros: Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, where restored mansions now house boutique hotels, cafés and galleries, and where brightly painted homes and murals climb narrow lanes. The poet Pablo Neruda's former house, La Sebastiana, and the ascensores that carry passengers up the hillsides are among the city's most recognizable experiences.
Beyond the historic centre, Valparaíso is an active commercial port, the seat of Chile's National Congress and home to several universities. Its fish markets, seafood restaurants and relaxed harbourfront give the city a working character that complements the nearby beach resort of Viña del Mar and the wine country of the Casablanca Valley.
Both leisure and business travellers are drawn to Valparaíso for its cultural energy, event calendar and gateway role on the Pacific coast, with easy access from Santiago and a compact centre that rewards exploring on foot and by funicular.

Valparaíso Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
November to March brings the warmest, driest weather and the best conditions for exploring the hills and harbour, while December and January are the busiest months and Valparaíso's New Year fireworks draw large crowds. Spring and autumn are quieter and still mild.
How to Get Around
Valparaíso is best explored on foot and by using its historic funiculars, known as ascensores, which connect the flat city centre with the hills. Buses, trolleybuses and taxis cover longer distances, and driving is possible but parking on the narrow hill streets can be limited.
Where to Stay
Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the most popular areas, with boutique hotels, guesthouses and cafés set among colourful murals and ocean views. The flat Plan district near the port offers easier access to transport, while neighbouring Viña del Mar has larger beachfront hotels.
Food & Drink
Valparaíso is known for fresh Pacific seafood served at market stalls and restaurants, along with the local dish chorrillana and traditional empanadas. Cafés and bars cluster around the port and in the hill neighbourhoods, while nearby Casablanca Valley wineries offer wine tastings.
