About Nuevo Chaitén Airport
Nuevo Chaitén Airport is a small regional airport serving the town of Chaitén and communities across northern Chilean Patagonia, including Palena and Futaleufú. Opened in 2015, it replaced the earlier aerodrome that was damaged during the 2008 eruption of Chaitén volcano.
Located about 18 km northwest of Chaitén in the Los Lagos Region, the airport has a single passenger terminal of about 634 square metres and a 1,200-metre asphalt runway. It mainly handles domestic regional flights and general aviation.
Scheduled flights connect the airport with Puerto Montt, operated by regional airlines such as Aerocord and Pewen, giving Chaitén a regular air link with the rest of Chile. Access to the town is by road, with transfers, taxis and rental vehicles available for onward travel.
Although small, the airport provides essential year-round air connectivity for an area where travel otherwise depends heavily on ferries and weather conditions.
