About Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia is a Pacific island nation of more than 600 islands scattered across the western Pacific. Spread over four states — Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae — it offers a quiet, nature-focused travel experience far from busy mass tourism.
The capital Palikir sits on the volcanic island of Pohnpei, the country's administrative centre. Weno in Chuuk, Colonia in Yap and Tofol in Kosrae serve as the main hubs of the outer states, while smaller towns and coastal villages retain a relaxed island lifestyle.
The landscape shifts between mountainous volcanic islands, dense rainforest, mangrove coasts and low coral atolls. Pohnpei is home to the ancient stone city of Nan Madol, Chuuk Lagoon holds a renowned collection of WWII shipwrecks, and Yap remains known for its stone money and strong traditional culture.
Diving, snorkelling, fishing and cultural visits are central to the visitor experience, and the country is also relevant for regional business, government and NGO travel. Its position in the western Pacific makes Guam, Hawaii and other Pacific destinations natural connecting points.
Four international airports — on Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap and Kosrae — are linked by island-hopping flights, while boats and limited road networks connect ports, towns and attractions within each state. This makes transfers, private drivers and organised ground transport useful for moving between airports, hotels, villages and dive sites.
