About Ulithi Airport
Ulithi Airport, also known as Ulithi Civil Airfield, is a small public airfield serving Falalop Island in the Ulithi Atoll of Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia. It is a key link for the atoll's small island communities, connecting them with Yap and other outer islands through Pacific Mission Aviation services.
The airfield has a single concrete runway of approximately 914 metres, set on the northeast side of Ulithi Atoll. It is unattended, with no control tower, lighting or refuelling facilities, so travellers and operators are expected to make arrangements before arrival. The FSM Division of Civil Aviation oversees the airfield and requires landing permits filed in advance.
The site has a long history. A Japanese airstrip was built on Falalop during the Second World War and was later improved by U.S. naval construction units after Ulithi Atoll was captured in September 1944. The present civil airfield was activated in 1977.
Ulithi Airport sits about 1 km from the primary settlements on Falalop Island and roughly 194 km east of Yap International Airport. With no scheduled ground transport network, onward movement within the atoll is typically arranged locally, by boat or through pre-arranged transfers.
