About Kosrae
Kosrae is the easternmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia, a compact volcanic island often called the "island of the sleeping lady" because of its mountainous silhouette. Tofol, in Lelu Municipality, serves as the seat of government, while quiet villages, a fringing reef and dense rainforest give the island a calm, unspoiled character.
The island's past is most visible at the Lelu ruins on Lelu Island, a partly walled royal city built from stacked basalt stones that was once a centre of power in the eastern Caroline Islands. Later Spanish, German, Japanese and American periods left their mark, and today strong Congregational church traditions and close-knit communities remain central to local life.
Kosrae is small enough to explore easily, with a paved road looping the island and four main municipalities: Lelu, Malem, Utwe and Tafunsak. Visitors can hike Mount Finkol, follow waterfall trails, boat through mangrove channels and the Yela Ka forest, and explore the Utwe-Walung Marine Park, while the surrounding reef supports snorkelling and diving.
Diving and eco-tourism shape much of the island's appeal, with coral walls, reef drop-offs and a few historic wrecks. Accommodation is limited but comfortable, mostly small lodges and guesthouses, and the island's modest scale encourages slow travel and everyday village life.
For travellers, Kosrae suits both low-key leisure and small-scale business or official visits, including government and development work. United Airlines' island-hopper flights link it with Pohnpei, Chuuk, Guam and Honolulu, making Kosrae a distinctive stop in Micronesia for those seeking nature, history and quiet.

Kosrae Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The months from January to April are typically drier and popular for sightseeing, while calmer periods between July and October often suit diving and snorkelling. The climate is warm and tropical year-round.
How to Get Around
A paved road circles most of the island, and visitors commonly rent a car or use taxis arranged through hotels. The small scale of Kosrae makes walking and cycling practical in and around villages, while boats are used to reach Lelu Island and some mangrove or reef sites.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is concentrated around Tofol, Lelu and the Okat and Malem side of the island, close to the airport. Small lodges and guesthouses offer a relaxed base, often with reef access, dive services and island tours.
Food & Drink
Local meals feature fresh reef fish, breadfruit, taro, bananas, citrus and coconuts, often prepared simply at family-run restaurants and guesthouses. Imported goods are limited, so dining is small-scale and seasonal, with local tangerines and other produce from home gardens.
