About Chuuk
Weno is the main urban centre and capital of Chuuk State in the Federated States of Micronesia, located on Weno Island inside the sheltered waters of Chuuk Lagoon. As the largest town in the country, it serves as the administrative, commercial and transport hub for Chuuk's many lagoon and outer islands.
Chuuk Lagoon is best known for its extraordinary concentration of World War II shipwrecks. During Operation Hailstone in February 1944, dozens of Japanese vessels and aircraft were sunk in the lagoon, and today these wrecks form one of the world's most significant wreck-diving destinations, attracting divers from around the globe.
The town of Weno itself is compact and practical rather than polished, with a busy main road, small shops, churches, schools and government offices spread across the island. Beyond the commercial centre, villages and family compounds continue a way of life rooted in fishing, breadfruit, taro and extended-family traditions, with Chuukese as the everyday language alongside English.
For travellers, Weno is the gateway to Chuuk's dive operators, lagoon islands and outer atolls. Most visitors combine wreck diving with visits to nearby islands, cultural sites and the quieter village landscape of the lagoon, while the island's small hotels and dive resorts provide a base for exploring.
Weno matters for both leisure and business travel because it concentrates Chuuk's airport, port, government offices, dive industry and accommodation in one small urban area. Its remote tropical setting and underwater history give the destination a distinctive appeal, while its role as the state's service centre makes it the natural arrival point for any trip to Chuuk.

Chuuk Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier season from November to April is generally the best time for diving, sightseeing and island trips, with calmer seas and lower humidity. Chuuk still receives rain throughout the year, so visitors should be prepared for tropical showers at any time.
How to Get Around
Weno is small enough to explore by taxi, rental car or scooter, and shared vans are used along the main road. Boats are essential for reaching other lagoon islands, dive sites and the outer atolls.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Weno is limited and mostly concentrated around the main road, lagoon shore and dive resorts. Staying near the commercial centre or at a dive resort makes it easier to reach the airport, restaurants and dive operators.
Food & Drink
Chuukese food centres on fresh fish, breadfruit, taro, coconut and locally grown fruit, often served at hotel restaurants and family-run eateries. Imported goods and Asian-influenced dishes are also common, and the most reliable dining options are found in Weno's hotels and small restaurants.
