About Yap

Yap is the westernmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia and one of the Pacific's most culturally distinctive destinations. Its small capital, Colonia, sits on the main island of Wa'ab and serves as the commercial, administrative and tourism hub for an island group known above all for its giant stone money, the carved limestone disks called rai.

Yap's past is layered: Spanish, German, Japanese and American administrations each left traces before the Federated States of Micronesia gained self-government under a Compact of Free Association with the United States. Traditional Yapese culture remains unusually strong, with village caste customs, outrigger canoe building and rai disks still recognized as property in formal transactions.

Colonia is a compact town where most points of interest lie within walking distance along the waterfront and main road. Visitors can see rai disks in front yards and at accessible stone money banks such as Balebat, browse woven pandanus crafts and produce at the Old Yapese Market, and learn about canoe voyaging and colonial history at the Yap Living History Museum.

The island's real draw for many travelers is its world-class diving, especially the manta ray cleaning stations at channels such as Mi'il Channel, where encounters are especially reliable from December to April. Nearby villages, including the Bechiyal Cultural Village in the north, offer demonstrations of traditional dance, sailing and crafts.

Yap is not a resort destination: beaches are limited, restaurants are few, and infrastructure is modest. For divers, cultural travelers and business visitors connected to the island's small fishing, government and service economy, it offers a genuinely distinctive Pacific experience built around tradition, marine life and an unhurried local pace.

Yap Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from December to April offer the best conditions for diving and outdoor visits, and coincide with reliable manta ray sightings at the island's cleaning stations. May to November is wetter and more humid, though travel is possible year-round.

How to Get Around

Colonia's waterfront, market and museum area is compact and easy to explore on foot. For stone money banks, cultural villages and dive sites beyond the town, renting a small car or hiring a taxi is the practical option, since public transport on Yap is very limited.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is in or near Colonia, with options ranging from dive-oriented resorts such as Manta Ray Bay Resort to small guesthouses and pensions. Staying near the waterfront keeps the market, museum and dive piers within easy walking distance.

Food & Drink

Dining on Yap centres on a handful of Colonia restaurants and resorts serving locally caught tuna, wahoo and Pacific-inspired dishes. The Old Yapese Market offers local produce and weekend fish grills, while betel nut remains an important daily social custom.
