About Xi'an Xiguan Airport
Xi'an Xiguan Airport (SIA) was the main airport serving Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province, from its opening in 1924 until its closure on 1 September 1991. It began as a simple landing ground on the western side of the city and developed into the region's principal air gateway during the 20th century.
Located in the Xiguan area, roughly 4.4 km from the city centre near the Bell Tower, the airport operated a single runway and a compact passenger terminal. Its close position made onward travel into central Xi'an unusually short by road for a city airport of its era.
The airport served both civil and military aviation during its history, including a period of military use during the Second Sino-Japanese War. After more than six decades of service, it was replaced by the newly built Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, which opened in 1991 and continues to serve the region today.
The former Xiguan site was later redeveloped as Fengqing Park in 2004. Although no longer operational, Xi'an Xiguan Airport remains an important part of the city's aviation history as Shaanxi's first airport and long-time gateway for travellers arriving in the region.
