About Wiesbaden Army Airfield
Wiesbaden Army Airfield (WIE) is a U.S. Army military airfield located in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim, about 8 km southeast of central Wiesbaden in Hesse, Germany. The installation forms part of Lucius D. Clay Kaserne and supports military, government and official aviation rather than scheduled commercial passenger flights.
The airfield opened in 1929, when the former Erbenheim racecourse was converted into a flying field. U.S. forces took control of the site in 1945, and the base later supported operations during the Berlin Airlift and became an important American aviation hub in the Rhine-Main region. In 2012 the installation was renamed Lucius D. Clay Kaserne.
Today the airfield serves U.S. Army units, including helicopter and fixed-wing aviation operations, while the wider installation hosts U.S. Army Europe and Africa headquarters. It operates a single asphalt runway and does not provide public passenger terminals or commercial airline facilities.
The installation is reached mainly by road, with the A66 motorway and local routes linking it to Wiesbaden, Mainz and the wider Frankfurt area. Because it is an active military base, access is restricted and travel to or from the airfield is normally arranged through official channels or pre-booked private transportation.
