About the Event
Frankfurter Buchmesse is the international publishing industry's largest trade fair and its most important marketplace for content, spanning novels, children's books, academic databases and stories adapted for film, games and virtual reality. The 2027 edition, the 79th in the fair's history, takes place from 6 to 10 October 2027 at Messe Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Hesse.
Publishing professionals from around the world use the five days to trade rights, negotiate licences, scout new titles and build partnerships with companies from the technology sector and related creative and cultural industries. Alongside the business programme, the fair is also a major public event where readers can meet authors, attend readings and buy books.
Chile is the Guest of Honour for 2027, making it the fourth Latin American country to take on the role. Its presentation is announced under the motto 'Through the clear skies of literature', a reference to the vast, clear starry skies visible across much of Chile. The programme places works by renowned writers such as Pablo Neruda, Isabel Allende and Roberto Bolaño alongside new literary voices, and highlights the country's young publishing scene and internationally recognised book illustrations. A delegation of 13 Chilean authors is due to travel to Frankfurt.
The Guest of Honour programme extends beyond books into a diverse cultural schedule of art, music, film and performances that offers insight into Chile's cultural and social life. In the run-up to the fair, the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs' cultural department (DIRAC) has offered funding to support publishers translating Chilean literature into German, and a longlist of Chilean titles recommended for translation gives international publishers an overview of current literature and translation rights.
Trade visitors include publishers, literary agents, rights managers, booksellers, librarians, authors, illustrators and translators, together with representatives of technology and media companies. Members of the public are admitted on the public days, where they can explore exhibition halls, meet authors at signings and talks, and discover new voices.
In recent editions the fair has brought together around 4,000 exhibitors and more than 230,000 visitors across thousands of events, reflecting its role as a global meeting point for the book and content industries. The 2027 edition continues this format with exhibition areas, stages, readings, professional meetings and networking opportunities across the halls of Messe Frankfurt.
