About Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport
Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport is a private airfield in the Finkenwerder quarter of southwest Hamburg, Germany, closely linked to the Airbus Hamburg-Finkenwerder plant. It mainly supports aircraft production, test flights, delivery flights and corporate traffic rather than scheduled passenger services.
The site's aviation history dates back to the 1930s, when the Blohm & Voss shipbuilding company moved into aircraft manufacture. Today the airfield operates a single paved runway and serves the adjoining Airbus final assembly and outfitting facilities on the Elbe.
Located roughly 10 km west of central Hamburg, the airport is reached by road, with access to the city centre by taxi, private transfer or rental car. Because it is a factory airfield, access is generally restricted to authorized personnel and pre-arranged flights.
For most commercial travellers, Hamburg Airport remains the region's main passenger gateway, while XFW functions as an industrial and business aviation facility. Its position on the Elbe keeps it close to Hamburg's port and industrial districts.
