About Usharal Airport
Usharal Airport is the main air gateway to Usharal and the Lake Alakol area in Kazakhstan's Zhetysu region. The aerodrome was established in 1970 as a military airfield supporting a garrison near the Dzungarian Gates, and a fighter aviation regiment remained based there until 1992.
The airport received major upgrades between 2015 and 2017, including runway repairs, a new taxiway and apron, and a new terminal building, before reopening for civilian seasonal flights on July 21, 2017. The runway, taxiways and apron were reconstructed again in 2021–2022, allowing larger aircraft to operate.
Located about 5 km west of central Usharal, the airport primarily serves seasonal domestic flights from Almaty and Astana. It is the closest air connection to Lake Alakol's lakeside resorts and sanatoriums, roughly 70 km away, and is used mainly by leisure travelers heading to the lake.
Travelers can continue from the airport to Usharal town or the Lake Alakol resort villages by taxi, local bus, private transfer, or pre-arranged chauffeur and group transport.
