About Ulytau
Ulytau is a small settlement and the administrative centre of Ulytau District in central Kazakhstan, set at the eastern foothills of the Ulytau Mountains in the newly formed Ulytau Region. The village is modest in size, but its surrounding steppe and hills hold a central place in Kazakh national identity, often described as the historical and spiritual heart of the country.
The area is closely tied to the founding of the Kazakh Khanate and the legacy of the Golden Horde. Around Ulytau stand the mausoleum of Zhoshy (Jochi) Khan, eldest son of Genghis Khan, the mausoleum of Alasha Khan, the Dombauyl monument and the remains of the medieval settlement of Baskamyr. These sites, together with ancient petroglyphs and burial mounds, make Ulytau one of Kazakhstan's most significant open-air historical landscapes.
Most visitors come for heritage and nature rather than urban attractions. The Ulytau National Historical, Cultural and Natural Museum-Reserve coordinates key monuments, while the low Ulytau Mountains offer viewpoints, hiking and sacred sites linked to Kazakh legends. Guided routes typically connect the village with Zhezkazgan, about 110-130 kilometres away, which provides hotels, restaurants and transport services.
The wider region is dominated by copper mining and metallurgy centred on Zhezkazgan, so business travel to the area is often tied to industry, logistics and regional administration. Ulytau itself remains quiet and rural, with limited nightlife and a focus on cultural events, pilgrimage and research tourism.
For both leisure and business travellers, Ulytau offers a rare combination of dramatic steppe scenery, early Kazakh history and access to one of Central Asia's most important archaeological regions, best explored with local guidance and a flexible itinerary.

Ulytau Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Late spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the steppe and historical sites, with warm days and cooler nights. Summer is the main season for road trips and outdoor visits, while winter is very cold and best avoided for open-air sightseeing.
How to Get Around
Ulytau is a remote rural settlement, so a private car, 4x4 or organised tour is the most practical way to reach the mausoleums, mountains and surrounding sites. Some visitors travel by taxi or shared transport from Zhezkazgan, and walking is possible only within the village itself.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Ulytau village is limited, mainly to guest houses and seasonal yurt or family stays. Most travellers base themselves in Zhezkazgan, the regional centre about 110-130 kilometres away, where hotels and restaurants are more readily available.
Food & Drink
Local food is traditional Kazakh cuisine, including beshbarmak, kazy and kumys made from mare's milk, often served in village guest houses and family cafés. For a wider choice of restaurants and shops, Zhezkazgan is the nearest practical option.
