About Jetisu

Taldykorgan is the administrative centre of Kazakhstan's Jetisu (Zhetysu) region, set in the southeast of the country near the foothills of the Dzungarian Alatau and the Karatal River. Its name means 'willow hill', and the city serves as a practical gateway to the Semirechye, or Seven Rivers, area.

The city grew from the small settlement of Gavrilovka, founded in 1868, and became the centre of its own province during the Soviet period. In 2022 it was chosen as the capital of the newly created Jetisu region, which strengthened its role as a regional administrative and transport hub.

Central Taldykorgan is known for its tree-lined avenues and Soviet-era civic buildings alongside newer developments. Key places include the M. Tynyshpaev Regional Museum of Local History, the Ilyas Zhansugurov Literary Museum and Palace of Culture, the Biken Rimova Drama Theatre, Central Park with its Obelisk of Glory, and the Zhetisu monument.

As a regional centre, the city supports agriculture, food processing, trade and public administration, while nearby landscapes such as Alakol Lake and the Dzungarian Alatau attract outdoor travellers. For both leisure and business visitors, Taldykorgan offers a compact base with useful connections by air, rail and road to Almaty and the wider Jetisu region.
