About Tokunoshima Airport
Tokunoshima Airport is the main air gateway to Tokunoshima, one of the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is located in the town of Amagi on the island and mainly handles domestic regional flights operated by Japan Air Commuter to Kagoshima and Amami. Opened in 1962, the airport has a single compact terminal building. In 2012 it was given the nickname Tokunoshima Kodakara Airport to mark the 50th anniversary of its opening. The airport is about 25 km from Kametsu, the main town of Tokunoshima, with car or taxi journeys typically taking around 40 minutes and local buses around 50 minutes. Taxis and rental cars are available for onward travel around the island. Facilities are simple but practical, including a restaurant, shops selling local products and souvenirs, and a waiting area.
