About Kagoshima
Kagoshima is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Kyushu, set on Kinko Bay with the active volcano Sakurajima rising directly across the water. Often compared to Naples for its bay and volcanic backdrop, the city mixes a subtropical southern atmosphere with the history of the Satsuma domain.
As the former castle town of the Shimazu clan, Kagoshima helped shape modern Japan through figures such as Saigō Takamori and other leaders of the Meiji Restoration. Sengan-en, a historic Shimazu garden overlooking Sakurajima, and the hilltop Shiroyama Observatory connect visitors to this samurai and early-modern heritage, while the Reimeikan museum documents the region's history.
The central Tenmonkan district is the city's main shopping, dining and nightlife area, while the waterfront around Kagoshima Chuo Station includes museums, the aquarium and ferry access. Sakurajima itself can be reached in about 15 minutes by ferry, with trails, viewpoints and hot spring experiences around the volcano.
Kagoshima is also a working regional centre with food processing, agriculture, fisheries and aerospace-related industries, along with ferries serving remote islands such as Yakushima and the Amami archipelago. Its mild climate, volcano, gardens and easy connections to southern Kyushu's islands make it appealing for both leisure and business travellers.
