About New Tanegashima Airport
New Tanegashima Airport is the main airport serving Tanegashima, one of the Ōsumi Islands in southern Kagoshima Prefecture. Opened in 2006 as New Tanegashima Airport and later renamed Tanegashima Airport, it replaced the island's earlier airport and enabled jet services to operate on the island.
Located in Nakatane, roughly 14 km south of Nishinoomote, the airport connects Tanegashima with Kagoshima and Osaka Itami through Japan Air Commuter flights. It serves leisure and business travelers, including visitors heading to the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center.
The airport has a single one-story passenger terminal with a restaurant, souvenir shop, exhibition space and rooftop observation deck. Ground transportation includes scheduled airport buses, taxis and rental cars, since the island has no rail network.
With its compact terminal and direct domestic connections, the airport acts as a practical gateway for reaching Tanegashima's towns and the space center.
