About Wakkanai Airport

Wakkanai Airport is the northernmost airport in Japan capable of handling jet aircraft and serves the city of Wakkanai in the Soya region of Hokkaido. Opened in 1960, the airport has developed through several runway extensions, with the runway reaching 2,200 metres in 2009 and the current passenger terminal completed in 1998.

Located about 12 kilometres from central Wakkanai, the airport is a key gateway for domestic travel and provides convenient access to Cape Soya, Japan's northernmost point, as well as ferry connections to the islands of Rishiri and Rebun.

The airport operates through one compact terminal serving domestic flights, including scheduled All Nippon Airways services. Despite its modest size, it offers practical passenger facilities such as dining, shopping, Wi-Fi, charging points and an observation deck.

Ground transport to the city centre, JR Wakkanai Station and the ferry terminal is available by scheduled bus, taxi, private transfer and rental car, making onward travel around the northern tip of Hokkaido relatively straightforward.
