Okinoerabu Airport is the main air gateway to Okinoerabujima, a small island in Kagoshima Prefecture, and serves the island towns of Wadomari and China. The airport handles domestic flights and links the island with Kagoshima on the Kyushu mainland as well as the nearby Amami Islands and Okinawa.
The airport opened on 1 May 1969 with a 1,200-meter runway. In 2005 the runway was extended to 1,350 meters and reinforced so that larger Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 aircraft could operate, improving regional connectivity for residents and visitors.
Located in the town of Wadomari, the airport sits about 10 km from Wadomari town centre and can be reached by local bus, taxi or rental car. Buses also connect the airport with China town, while the island's free-ride bus system offers additional flexibility for getting around.
