About Spangdahlem Air Base
Spangdahlem Air Base is a United States Air Force installation located near the small town of Spangdahlem in the Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate, about 30 km north of Trier. The base has supported U.S. military aviation in Europe since it was built between 1951 and 1953, and it became operational on 10 May 1953.
Home to the 52nd Fighter Wing, the installation serves primarily military missions rather than commercial airline traffic, but its AMC passenger terminal supports military and space-available passenger movements. The single terminal is being expanded to add more check-in counters, a larger baggage area, and enlarged security and customs facilities.
The air base is connected for authorized travelers through on-base taxis and shuttles, rental car options, and road links to nearby towns including Bitburg and Wittlich. The closest rail access is at Speicher, with wider rail connections available from Trier.
Because access is limited to authorized personnel, space-available passengers, and approved visitors, travel planning differs from a typical public airport. Once on base, passengers have access to lodging, dining, a terminal snack bar, Wi-Fi, and other support services.
