Sodankylä Airport (SOT)

Sodankylä Airport, known by the IATA code SOT and ICAO code EFSO, serves the municipality of Sodankylä in Finnish Lapland. It functions mainly as a general aviation airfield, supporting business and charter flights, rescue helicopter operations, aviation maintenance, hobby flying, and Arctic research and testing activities.

The airfield has a long history in the region. A gravel runway was built in 1971, and in 1989 the asphalt runway and terminal building were completed. Light scheduled flights operated for a period from 1989 to 1996, and today the field focuses on non-scheduled aviation and the municipality is investigating its development into an EU-certified airport.

Located about 3 km southeast of central Sodankylä, the airfield has a 1,500-metre asphalt runway and operates as an uncontrolled aerodrome with no air traffic control service. Its position makes it a practical gateway for private and charter travel to Sodankylä and the surrounding Lapland area.

Road access connects the airfield to the town, and travellers using scheduled services typically continue from the nearby regional airports at Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo. For private flights, Sodankylä Airport offers a compact and well-maintained arrival point in the heart of northern Finland.
