About Tavastia Proper
Hämeenlinna is a historic lakeside city in southern Finland and the capital of the Tavastia Proper (Kanta-Häme) region. Set on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi, it is best known as the birthplace of composer Jean Sibelius and the home of the medieval Häme Castle, which gives the city its name.
The city's history reaches back to the Middle Ages, when the red-brick castle was built in the 13th century and a settlement grew around it. Today the lakefront fortress is the city's most recognisable landmark, and the surrounding National Urban Park links heritage buildings, waterfront routes and green spaces.
Key attractions include the Sibelius Birthplace house, the Hämeenlinna Art Museum and Verkatehdas cultural centre, Museo Militaria and the nearby Aulanko Nature Reserve with its observation tower and parkland. The design and art village of Iittala, known for Finnish glass, is a short train ride away.
Hämeenlinna is also a practical base for both leisure and business travel. It lies on the main Helsinki to Tampere railway line, about 100 km from Helsinki and 75 km from Tampere, making it easy to reach for meetings, events and day trips.
Visitors will find a relaxed, walkable centre around the Market Square, lakeside trails, seasonal events and local Tavastian food culture, alongside modern hotels and conference facilities.
