About Varkaus Airport
Varkaus Airport is located in Joroinen, about 16 kilometres south of Varkaus, in Finland's Northern Savonia region. For decades it functioned as the air gateway to Varkaus, an industrial town set among the lakes of eastern Finland.
Regular scheduled passenger flights ended in 2013, and Finavia later withdrew the airport from its network around the turn of 2015 and 2016. After the airfield permit was cancelled in January 2020, the site reopened for general aviation in September 2022 under the management of Joroinen municipality.
The airfield has a 2,000-metre asphalt runway and serves private aircraft, business flights and flight training through the Varkaus Flying Club. The former passenger terminal is no longer used for regular passenger operations.
Road connections link the airfield with Varkaus and the centre of Joroinen, which lies only a couple of kilometres away. Taxis and local bus services provide onward travel to the town and the wider Northern Savonia region.
