About Lapland
Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland, sitting just a few kilometres south of the Arctic Circle at the meeting point of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers. Widely known as the official hometown of Santa Claus, it serves as a year-round gateway to Arctic experiences such as the northern lights, the midnight sun, and reindeer and husky safaris.
The city was heavily destroyed during the Second World War and later rebuilt under a plan by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. His influence remains visible in the reindeer-antler layout of the streets and in landmark buildings such as the administrative and cultural centre. Other notable sites include the Arktikum museum and science centre, the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge and Rovaniemi Church.
Santa Claus Village, located right on the Arctic Circle, is among the best-known attractions, while the riverside area offers museums, galleries, cafés and walking paths. Ounasvaara hill and the surrounding forests provide easy access to skiing, hiking and outdoor recreation throughout the year.
As Lapland's administrative and commercial centre, Rovaniemi is home to the University of Lapland, the Arctic Centre and a growing tourism industry. Its food scene highlights local ingredients such as reindeer, salmon, Arctic char and wild berries, served in restaurants across the city centre and Santa Claus Village.
Strong air connections and a busy winter season make Rovaniemi relevant for both leisure and business travellers, whether they come for seasonal holidays, Arctic research and conferences, or meetings and events in the north.
