About Shah Amanat International Airport
Shah Amanat International Airport is the second-largest airport in Bangladesh and the main air gateway for Chattogram and the wider southeastern region. It handles domestic flights, particularly the busy Dhaka–Chattogram route, as well as international services to Middle Eastern and regional destinations.
The airfield was built in 1940 by the British government during World War II and was later used as a combat airfield during the Burma Campaign. After Bangladesh's independence it operated mainly as a domestic airport, before gaining international status in 1990. A major expansion completed in 2000 modernised the terminal, and the airport was renamed Shah Amanat International Airport in 2005.
The airport is located at Patenga, southwest of Chattogram on the bank of the Karnaphuli River, roughly 20 km from the city's main commercial area. It has a single passenger terminal divided into domestic and international sections, along with a single runway that can accommodate wide-body aircraft.
Transport links include taxis, app-based rides, buses, private transfers and car rental, with a typical journey to the city centre taking around 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
