About Shamshernagar Airport
Shamshernagar Airport is a Bangladesh Air Force base and former public airport located about 17 kilometres southeast of Moulvibazar in the Sylhet Division of northeastern Bangladesh. It serves primarily military aviation, while civil operations are allowed only with prior approval from the Bangladesh Air Force.
The airfield was established during the British colonial period and played a strategic role in World War II as a hub for "Over the Hump" airlift operations supplying China from British India. During the 1971 Liberation War it was the base of Kilo Force, the first fighting formation of what became the Bangladesh Air Force.
Scheduled commercial passenger services were suspended in July 2015 due to limited demand and operational constraints, and the airport now functions mainly as a military station. Osmani International Airport in Sylhet is the nearest commercial airport, roughly 90 minutes away by road.
Travel to and from Shamshernagar is by road to Moulvibazar and onward to Sylhet and other parts of the region. Passenger facilities at the airfield remain minimal, so travelers should plan transport and essentials in advance.
