About Schleswig Air Base
Schleswig Air Base is an active military airfield of the German Air Force, located near the village of Jagel in Schleswig-Holstein, close to the city of Schleswig. The base has been in military use since it was founded in 1916 and serves as a NATO airfield in northern Germany. The airfield is best known as the home of Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 Immelmann, which operates reconnaissance Tornado aircraft. It has two asphalt runways and is used primarily for military flying operations rather than scheduled commercial passenger services. The base lies roughly 6 km south of central Schleswig and is connected to the region by the A7 motorway and the B77 road, with Schleswig railway station providing onward rail connections. Flensburg and Kiel are the main larger centres within reasonable driving distance. Because it is a restricted military installation, public passenger facilities are limited, and access is generally reserved for military personnel and authorized visitors.
