About Rebun Airport
Rebun Airport is a small regional airport on Rebun Island in northern Hokkaido and historically Japan's northernmost airport. It opened in June 1978 to give the island community short commuter connections across the Soya region.
Air Nippon and later Air Hokkaido operated a small daily service between Rebun and Wakkanai with 19-seat aircraft. Demand remained limited, the route ended in 2003, and the airport was formally suspended in April 2009; no scheduled flights have operated since.
The airport sits near the island's northern tip, roughly 20 km from the main settlement of Kafuka, with a single 800-metre asphalt runway and a compact passenger terminal. Travelers can reach Kafuka by road and then continue to Wakkanai or Rishiri by ferry.
While scheduled passenger services remain suspended, the airport stays available for limited emergency use and remains part of local discussions about future regional connectivity on Rebun Island.
