About Okushiri Airport

Okushiri Airport is the only scheduled air gateway to Okushiri Island, a small island off the southwestern coast of Hokkaido, Japan. Opened in 1974, the airport provides essential domestic connections for residents and visitors, with Hokkaido Air System flights to Hakodate and weekend and holiday service to Sapporo Okadama added in 2021. The airport operates from a single two-story terminal that opened in 2004. The runway was extended from 800 meters to 1,500 meters in 2006, allowing modern regional aircraft to serve the island. Passenger functions, including check-in, security, waiting areas, boarding, and baggage claim, are concentrated on the first floor, while the second floor includes an indoor observation deck and offices. Located in the Aonae area of Okushiri town, the airport sits roughly 18 km from the main town centre. Onward travel across the island is available by town bus, taxi, or pre-arranged rental car, and ferry services from Esashi and Setana on the Hokkaido mainland provide an alternative route to and from the island. With a compact and easy-to-navigate terminal, the airport offers a straightforward travel experience focused on regional connectivity. On-site dining and shopping are limited, so travelers are advised to plan meals and supplies before or after visiting the airport.
