About Nakashibetsu Airport
Nakashibetsu Airport is a regional airport serving Nakashibetsu and the nearby city of Nemuro in eastern Hokkaido. It is managed by Hokkaido Prefecture and acts as the main air gateway to the easternmost part of Japan's northern island.
The airport opened for civilian use in 1965, and in 1989 a new runway and terminal were brought into service. The current terminal building is notable as Japan's first wooden airport terminal, and the runway was later extended to 2,000 metres to support larger aircraft.
Located about 4 km northwest of central Nakashibetsu, the airport connects eastern Hokkaido with Tokyo Haneda and Sapporo's New Chitose Airport through regular domestic flights. It also provides access to popular destinations such as the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage peninsula, Lake Mashu, Rausu and Utoro Onsen.
Ground access includes local buses to Nakashibetsu Bus Terminal, taxis, rental cars and private transfers, while express bus services link the airport with Shiretoko and other regional destinations. The compact terminal offers check-in, a departure lounge, shops, a restaurant and an observation deck.
