About Mbarara Airport
Mbarara Airport (MBQ), also known as Mbarara Airstrip, is a small airport serving Mbarara, a major commercial and administrative city in Uganda’s Western Region. It is managed by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and mainly supports general aviation, private and charter flights rather than scheduled airline operations.
The airport is located approximately 11 km northwest of Mbarara city centre, on the road towards Bwizibwera and Ibanda. It has a single unpaved murram runway measuring about 1,500 metres, with an orientation of 11/29 and an elevation of 4,600 feet, suitable for small aircraft.
Passenger handling takes place in a compact terminal building, and aviation security and aviation police are present on site. Fuel, meteorological, immigration and customs services are not currently available, so most onward services and accommodation are found in Mbarara city.
Road and public transport links connect the airstrip to Mbarara city centre, giving travellers access to hotels, businesses and onward routes across the Western Region, including destinations such as Lake Mburo National Park.
