About Western
Mbarara is the largest city in western Uganda and the main commercial and administrative hub of the Ankole sub-region. Set at roughly 1,400 metres above sea level beside the River Rwizi, it lies on the Kampala–Kabale highway about 270 kilometres southwest of Kampala, on the route toward Rwanda.
The city grew from a colonial trading and administrative centre in the former Ankole kingdom, whose cattle-keeping traditions still shape local identity. Its nickname, the Land of Milk, reflects a strong dairy economy and the long-horned Ankole cattle that remain central to the region's culture.
Key landmarks include Mbarara Cathedral, the Mbarara University of Science and Technology campus and the Igongo Cultural Centre, which documents Ankole heritage. The River Rwizi and its green banks cut through the city, while Lake Mburo National Park and rolling cattle country sit within easy reach for day trips.
Commercial and residential areas such as Kakoba, Kamukuzi, Nyamitanga and the central market district mix government offices, banks, shops, hotels, restaurants and market stalls. Local life centres on the market, the university community and the steady flow of long-distance traffic heading south and west.
Mbarara matters to leisure and business travellers alike as a regional trade and transport crossroads linking Kampala with Rwanda and the DR Congo, and as a practical base for national parks, university visits and conferences.
