About Yumbe

Yumbe is a small but strategically located town in north-western Uganda, close to the South Sudan border, and serves as the administrative centre of Yumbe District in the West Nile sub-region. It sits on the road network linking Arua to Koboko and nearby border crossings, making it an important regional stop for trade, aid and transit travel.

The town retains a strong Aringa cultural identity, with English as the official language and Aringa widely spoken in local markets and institutions. The area became Yumbe District in 2006, when Aringa County was separated from Arua District, and much of its identity is shaped by the surrounding Aringa community.

Visitors come mainly for the surrounding landscape and protected areas, notably Mount Kei Forest Reserve, a former white rhino sanctuary and rewarding birding area about 30 km from town, along with Agbinika Falls. The district also hosts Bidibidi refugee settlement, one of the world's largest, which has shaped local services, markets and economic life.

Yumbe town itself is a practical base for NGO, humanitarian and business travellers, with modest hotels, lodges and local restaurants around the centre. Road connections run about 75 km south to Arua and about 36 km to Koboko, while Arua Airport is the nearest scheduled air link. Yumbe appeals mainly to travellers heading to the border region, working on development projects or exploring the quieter attractions of West Nile.
