The airport opened on 5 August 1992 and has been managed by Airports of Thailand since 1998. It is named after Princess Srinagarindra, known as Mae Fah Luang, and plays an important role as a domestic gateway with frequent Bangkok flights operated by several Thai airlines, along with limited international connections.
