About Uttaradit

Uttaradit is the capital of Uttaradit Province in Thailand's lower north, built along the Nan River. The city's name means "northern port", a reminder of its long history as a riverside trading and rail town rather than a mass-tourism destination.

The modern town grew from Bang Pho Tha It, an old settlement that prospered when the Nan River was a key transport route. Later, the Northern Line railway strengthened its role as a stop between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The Phraya Phichai Dap Hak Monument honours the local 18th-century governor remembered for fighting on with a broken sword.

Local landmarks include Wat Tha Thanon, home to the revered Luang Pho Phet Buddha image, and Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang. Just outside town, Laplae preserves a traditional wooden old town and fruit orchards, while the Sirikit Dam, Lam Nam Nan National Park and Phu Soi Dao National Park draw nature visitors.

Uttaradit is best known across Thailand for its Laplae durian and langsat, celebrated during the annual fruit season and festivals. Markets and small riverside restaurants serve northern Thai dishes and local specialities such as khao phan phak.

For travellers, Uttaradit works as a relaxed base between Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Laos border, offering heritage, orchards, forest parks and provincial business functions without the crowds of larger northern cities.
