About Yasothon
Yasothon is the capital of Yasothon Province in northeastern Thailand's Isan region, a small and unhurried provincial city about 530 kilometres northeast of Bangkok. It is best known across the country for the Bun Bang Fai rocket festival, held each May to call for rain at the start of the rice-growing season.
The town centres on a compact grid of streets around the clock tower and Chaeng Sanit Road, with temples, markets and government offices within easy reach. Historic landmarks include Wat Mahathat, home to the ancient Phra That Yasothon stupa, and Phaya Thaen Public Park, a riverside green space featuring a rocket festival monument.
Yasothon sits in the Chi River basin, surrounded by rice fields and farming communities that shape local life and food culture. The wider province was separated from Ubon Ratchathani in 1972 and remains a quiet, agricultural corner of Isan known for jasmine rice and a friendly, small-town character.
Visitors come mainly for the May rocket festival, when elaborately decorated rockets are launched with parades, music and merit-making, drawing crowds from across the region. Other attractions include local temples, markets and simple riverside scenery rather than large-scale tourism infrastructure.
For travellers, Yasothon offers an authentic Isan experience with easy access to nearby provinces such as Roi Et and Ubon Ratchathani. It serves as a base for cultural visits and festival trips, while business travel is modest and centred on provincial administration, agriculture and local services.
