About JMSDF Omura Air Base
JMSDF Omura Air Base is a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force airfield in the Imazu district of Omura, Nagasaki Prefecture, on the eastern shore of Omura Bay. The site operated for many years as the civil Ōmura Airport until 1975, when the passenger terminal and commercial flights moved to the newly opened offshore Nagasaki Airport.
Today the base supports maritime aviation operations and is home to Fleet Air Wing 22, whose patrol helicopters conduct surveillance and related missions in the waters around Nagasaki. The airfield has a single asphalt runway, designated 18/36 and approximately 1,200 metres long.
The base is located about 30 km from central Nagasaki by road, across the bay from Nagasaki Airport (NGS), which serves scheduled passenger traffic for the region. Road connections link the base area to Omura city, Nagasaki and other parts of Nagasaki Prefecture.
Because JMSDF Omura Air Base is an active military installation, public access is restricted and it does not offer commercial passenger services. Travellers flying to the Nagasaki area use Nagasaki Airport, which is connected by bridge and road to the surrounding transport network.
